My Favorite Downtown LA Coffee Shops

May 1, 2018 No Comments
After officially working in DTLA for one full year (hooray for work anniversary!), I have narrowed down my favorite selections for coffee shops in downtown proper. Previously, I brought you an article as part of a collaboration with Dazey LA and highlighted coffee shops that make the best work spaces. These, however, are my favorite places based on the actual coffee, whether I have time for a quick cup or want a place to sit down and work.

I love (and prefer) a black cup of coffee but sometimes this self-care ritual calls for something special or different. You’ll find all of the above on this list.

Tilt
334 S. Main Street

I really considered not putting Tilt on the list because it’s my little hideaway secret. Tucked away in a sleek courtyard behind some businesses and new apartments, smack-dab in the middle of DTLA, this little space is an oasis. The Cloud Mocha (pictured above) is my go-to when I want something decadent and this is my favorite spot for an Iced Almondmilk Matcha on warmer days.

Verve Coffee Roasters
833 S. Spring Street

This coffee shop made my coffee workspace list because it is pretty awesome for getting work done with caffeine at arms reach. But let’s get real, I come here because it is the best Dirty Chai in all of LA. Perfectly spicy and a tad sweet, I challenge you to find a better one. They also have a Melrose location and one on 3rd Street near the Grove.
Bae
369 E. 2nd Street

This is where you go for something a little, shall we say, “out there.” Known for their soft serve ice cream in a variety of unique flavors, I prefer the Dirty Bae Latte, a grey concoction of activated charcoal and their Lover’s Latte (made with beets) was tasty, yet… interesting… The matcha muffin top is a fav side to compliment just about anything.

The Mighty
108 W. 2nd Street (corner of Main)

A plain ol’ cup of coffee, you say? I got you. The Stumptown brewed coffee with any number of sweet goodies or breakfast items makes The Mighty my place for black coffee. I could eat my way through any salad, pasta, or pie put in front of me here and the coffee always tastes perfect in their pretty, airy space.

Cafe Dulce
134 Japanese Village Plaza Mall (Little Tokyo)

I love wandering through the Japanese Village. It is seriously dangerous for me to walk down here on payday. The best Sanrio store is housed here as well as some great clothing shops, the Japanese markets, and of course Cafe Dulce. This is where I come for the perfect London FogThe Blueberry Matcha Latte is also a must try. And they always have the cutest, most L.A. to-go cups.

Urth Caffé
451 S. Hewitt St.

How do you have a list of best coffee and not include Urth Caffé? This well-known Los Angeles breakfast haven has one the most diverse and yummy organic coffee menus around. I can satisfy most cravings here (the DTLA location is in the Arts District) from their Green Tea Bebero to the wildly popular Spanish Latte.
There are so many choices for good coffee in DTLA so you really can’t go wrong, but I hope you enjoyed these specific recommendations.  I look forward to finding more special spots and endless cups of joe!
