There are some things that feel so, well, “very L.A.” The Sparrow Mart definitely FELT that way.
I pride myself on having the willpower to stand in line for just about anything. Maybe it’s the several year’s worth of Disneyland lines or just my ability to practice mindfulness so as to not have the small things annoy me. But before I brag anymore, I am reminded that I am not alone here in Los Angeles, where many-a-people are more than willing to stand in line for the latest curiosity.
This month Angelenos and tourists staying in DTLA are flocking to Australian artist Lucy Sparrow’s super mart located in The Standard Hotel. Each of the 30,000 pieces of “merchandise” that you would find in any American grocery store is made entirely of felt. Yes, 30,000 pieces of handmade felt goodies (from frozen corn dogs to lube)to purchase. Â Sparrow Mart is an adorable wondery worth seeing. Just get there early and avoid the crazy long line.
It opens at 11am (get there by 10am) and is free to enter. They let 55 people in at a time and you get 30 minutes to shop and take pics with your favorite felt bottle of alcohol or sweet indulgence. The seafood and meat counters are worth the time to appreciate the hard work that went into creating this pop-up art show/ toy shop. A gallery of large one-of-a-kind pieces is also on display. If you aren’t down for the trip, here’s a picture gallery for ya.
So what do you guys think? Art or craziness?
